Categorical and gradient aspects of wordlikeness*

چکیده
Gradientwordlikeness judgements do not necessarily imply that a gradientwell-formedness system underlies them; gradient judgements may be an artifact of gradient rating tasks. Dubious architectural assumptions are needed for speakers to report gradient well-formedness judgements. Simple baselines beer account for gradient well-formedness judgements than state-of-the-art computational models of gradient phonotactic knowledge.

Gradient and categorical constraints: evidence from Cantonese
Classical generative phonology draws a distinction between possible words (accidental gaps) and impossible words (systematic gaps) [4]. This model predicts that speakers should categorically judge accidental gaps to be well-formed and systematic gaps to be ill-formed, and thus rate accidental gaps more highly than systematic gaps in a wordlikeness judgment task. Such structure models attribute ...

متن کاملGrammar is both categorical and gradient Andries
In this paper, I discuss the results of word-likeness experiments conducted with speakers with Hebrew and English. The results of the experiments show that language users use their grammar in a categorical and a gradient manner. In word-likeness rating tasks, subjects make the categorical distinction between grammatical and ungrammatical – they assign all grammatical forms equally high ratings ...
متن کاملPerception of Wordlikeness: Effects of Segment Probability and Length on Subjective Ratings and Processing of Nonword Sound Patterns1
A stochastic phonological grammar based on positional constituent probabilities of words in the mental lexicon was used to generate nonword sound patterns. The subjective wordlikeness of these patterns was evaluated by naïve listeners using a 7-point rating scale. Subjective wordlikeness ratings were lower for nonwords containing low-probability constituents and were also lower for nonwords wit...

Soil erosion by surface runoff introduced as surface erosion is one of the main mechanisms of land degradation in the hill slopes. Slope characteristics including aspect and gradient can control the differences of soil properties along the hillslope. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of slope aspect and gradient on variations of some soil properties in the short slopes. Five hi...
